Angband ('Iron Prison' or 'Hell of Iron'; ang = iron, band = prison, duress) was a mighty fortified citadel originally constructed by Melkor in the earliest days of the world as an outlying fortress to his northern stronghold of Utumno. Utumno was destroyed by the Valar, and Melkor imprisoned in Valinor for three ages, but on his return to Middle-earth, he took Angband as the seat of his power, and raised the towers of Thangorodrim above its gates.

No New Posts Doriath - 1 Viewing

Doriath was the land of the Sindar. It was called the Fenced Land (Dor-iath), for its queen, Melian, put a girdle of enchantment about it, so that nobody could enter without King Thingol's permission. Doriath was a realm of forests about the great river Sirion, with in it the forests Neldoreth (also Taur-na-Neldor, the northern beech forest), Nivrim (also West-march, an oak forest), and Region (pronounced Reh-gi-on, the main forest). Additionally, the forests of Brethil and Nan Elmoth were held as part of Doriath, but these last two lay outside the Girdle of Melian. King Elu Thingol of Doriath, also High King of the Sindar, saw all of Beleriand as his realm, from the Gelion to Belegaer.

No New Posts Nargothrond

Inspired by Menegroth in Doriath, and seeking a hidden place from which to be safe from the forces of Morgoth, Finrod established it in the early years of the First Age, in the Caverns of Narog beneath the forested hills of Taur-en-Faroth on the western bank of Narog. He was aided by the Dwarves of the Ered Luin, who also made for him the Nauglamír, the Necklace of the Dwarves.

No New Posts The House of Hador

The house of Hador lived mostly in Brethil and some places in Dor-Lòmin. Brethil was a cluster of woods between the Teiglin and the Sirion, originally part of Doriath. The main feature of the forest was the hill of Amon Obel, upon which stood Ephel Brandir, the main settlement of the Haladin.

No New Posts Kingdoms of Turgon

Turgon kingdoms exsisted by two realms, one who was called Nevrast and the second was called Gondolin the hidden city. Gondolin (First Age c. 126 – 510, existed c. 384 years), the great Hidden City of Turgon was concealed from friend and foe alike during the First Age by the Encircling Mountains, and guarded from trespassers by the Eagles of Thorondor. The land of Nevrast lay at the coast of the Great Sea in Middle-earth. The name means Hither Shore in Sindarin, as opposed to the Distant Shore of Aman and was originally applied to all the shores of Beleriand.

No New Posts Falas - 1 Viewing

The Falas ("Coast" or "Shore") was an area on the west coast of Beleriand, south of Nevrast. The River Brithon and the River Nenning ran into the sea here. Sindarin Elves ruled by Círdan dwelt here, and built the havens of Brithombar and Eglarest. In F.A. 65, Finrod built the tower of Barad Nimras ("White Horn Tower") on a cape of the Falas between Brithombar and Eglarest, to watch for attacks from the sea by Morgoth. Fingon, High King of the Noldor Elves, came after the downfall of Hithlum.

No New Posts East Beleriand

That part of Beleriand that lay east of the River Sirion, and west of the Gelion. This region was largely under the control of the Sons of Fëanor during the First Age. Amrod (rod = power) (Years of the Trees – First Age 575), with his twin brother Amras, was the youngest of the seven Sons of Fëanor. After Fëanor's death he dwelt in the wide plains of East Beleriand and was known as a great hunter.

No New Posts Thargelion

Thargelion was a land of Beleriand. Thargelion literally meant 'beyond Gelion', as it was east of the river Gelion. It was north of the river Ascar, and therefore not counted as part of Ossiriand. After the Rebellion of the Noldor this was the land of Caranthir, one of the Sons of Fëanor, and after him it was often called Dor Caranthir. The Haladin briefly dwelt here until they were nearly wiped out in an Orc-raid.

No New Posts Ossiriand

Ossiriand was a region of eastern Beleriand. Ossiriand, or Land of Seven Rivers, was the most eastern region of Beleriand during the First Age, lying between the Ered Luin and the river Gelion. Along the northern shore of the Ascar ran the Dwarf-Road to Nogrod. Ossiriand was a green and forested land, and it was not populated by the Sindar. In the early First Age before the rise of the Moon, a part of the Telerin Elven people called Nandor entered Ossiriand under their leader Denethor, and were given permission by Thingol to settle the lands.

No New Posts Himring - 1 Viewing

The March of Maedhros was the northeastern borderlands of Beleriand, and the least defensible. They were held by the Sons of Fëanor under the general captaincy of Maedhros on Himring. Himring was a hill in the northeast of Beleriand, on which was the fortress of Maedhros, eldest of the Sons of Fëanor. This fortress is one of the few that could not be taken in his attack in Dagor Bragollach.

No New Posts Ered Luin

In the First Age, the Blue Mountains were an unbroken line separating Eriador from Beleriand. Seven rivers flowed from its western side, and the land these rivers flowed through was known as Ossiriand. Later, when the Green Elves settled there, the land was called Lindon, and the mountains sometimes referred to as the Ered Lindon. Two Dwarven Houses, the Firebeards and Broadbeams, awoke under Mount Dolmed, and built their great kingdoms Nogrod and Belegost, respectively.
